Bus Priority and BSIP
Bus priority
With a successful BSIP funding bid, Hertfordshire County Council has developed a set of priority schemes with aims to introduce measures to benefit public transport users.
The Proposals
To improve bus journey times and make buses more reliable Hertfordshire County Council is aiming to give buses greater priority on the road. By giving buses priority, more people can move more quickly on busy roads.
In February - March 2024, Hertfordshire County Council consulted the public on five bus priority projects in Hitchin, St. Albans and Stevenage

The proposal at Lister Hospital, Stevenage, received high levels of public support. Hertfordshire County Council is proposing to reorganise the bus stops at Lister Hospital and provide better access and facilities to support public transport, walking, wheeling and cycling.
The proposal at Queen Street, Hitchin, has been amended in response to feedback. They are proposing to upgrade the bus stops and passenger waiting facilities and improve walking and cycling connections. The bus lane is no longer part of the proposal, as it was not supported at consultation.
Hertfordshire County Council is refining the designs for both projects, looking towards construction from 2025.
They are not taking forward the other proposals in Hitchin and St Albans as these were not supported by the public. The decision not to proceed with these projects was supported by county councillors based on the consultation outcomes.
