Community Shelters Project - Marshalswick The Ridgeway The Quadrant

For this location, we worked with Sandridge Parish Council, St Albans Art Society, Art-K St Albans, Externiture and Little Thorpe of Leicester.

A brand new modern shelter has been installed by Externiture. Sitting next to the shelter are two wooden planter boxes which are being lovingly maintained by Sandridge Parish Council Volunteers. Further along on the island, two new benches have also been installed, adding additional accessible seating to the area.

Inside the new shelter, and the shelter opposite are the public art galleries which have a number of pieces created by several local artists using a variety of different methods. The artists vary in age from 6 to 70 and are members of the St Albans Art Society and Art-K St Albans.

This project has created a beautiful space that can be enjoyed by the bus users as well the local community, we hope you enjoy this space regardless of if you use the bus or not.

On Monday 22nd September we held an official opening ceremony for this new shelter.

Councillor Teresa Heritage, Mayor of St Albans City and District, County Councillor Paul Zukowskyj, County Councillor John Hale, Parish Councillor Carole Chalkley, Parish Councillor Michael White and Parish Councillor Anne Thomas were in attendance for this ribbon cutting event.

Councillor Teresa Heritage, Mayor of St Albans City and District had this to say:

”I was very impressed by the community bus shelter – and I am sure the people who use this stop will be too. It is important to encourage people to use public transport rather than cars in order to cut harmful emissions and buses play a vital role in that goal. Providing better shelters can only make people more aware of bus services and more likely to use them.”

County Councillor Paul Zukowskyj had this to say:

"It was lovely to see councils working together to deliver community benefits, local history and art is really important to showcase and the bus stop approach is great for that."

"The planters and green roof of the shelter are delightful, bringing colour to the streetscape and cheering all who pass by. It's really great that HCC can do its part by making such a mundane piece of street furniture such as a bus shelter a centrepiece of a community."

County Councillor John Hale had this to say:

“I am delighted that a bus shelter has been installed outside the shops. The green roof and artwork are a great addition to street scene. This is a good example of the county council working with the local parish council to the benefit of residents. My thanks to all involved.”
